Mindfulness meets Compassion Focused Therapy

This 8-week online course is based on Compassion Focused Therapy. It combines mindfulness with self-compassion practices designed to build self-esteem and self-confidence.

If you find that self-criticism, anxiety, low mood or self-doubt sometimes hold you back, this course will help you to begin countering these patterns.

Our human ability for self-awareness, and therefore self-criticism and self-doubt, is an aspect of the mind that can be challenging to manage. This course is designed to help you understand self-criticism and to learn ways of managing it.

The approach draws on an understanding of human evolution, biology and attachment theory to make sense of our ability to worry, self-critique and experience stress, anxiety and depression. You will learn about the key emotion regulation systems and how compassion and mindfulness practices can be used to soothe and regulate an ‘overactive’ threat or drive system.

In this course, you will learn about the human mind, how it works and how you can best manage it. We will practice ideas and techniques designed to support a more compassionate response towards ourselves. You will receive training in mindfulness and compassionate imagery, specifically developed to activate the soothing emotion systems.

The uncertainty and challenges resulting from the global pandemic are of course having an impact on our mental wellbeing. The tools and knowledge offered in this course are designed to support your ability to manage difficult circumstances. Being part of an online group will also offer opportunities for connection and shared learning, which many of us have been missing during these national lockdowns.

About the instructor:

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 12 years experience working in the NHS providing talking therapies for common mental health problems. I have a doctorate training in Clinical Psychology from Royal Holloway University of London. I have trained in Compassion Focused Therapy and also have qualifications in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy. I have attended and facilitated courses in mindfulness and compassion over the last 8 years, including training with Professor Paul Gilbert, founder of The Compassionate Mind Foundation and internationally recognised trainer and researcher in this field.

I am a registered Clinical Psychologist Practitioner with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and an accredited CBT Therapist with the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Individual therapy can allow you to go into the detail of your experience and situation. In this group course, we have the benefit of being focused on the practice and skills that we want to develop to cope more effectively. The group structure helps us to stay focused on covering these skills and ideas, giving you a comprehensive training in compassion-focused mindfulness. The course is not a group therapy. You will not be expected to share personal information if you do not wish to. The group is a supportive place to share your experience of practising the self-compassion skills. You will be invited to work with other group members to discuss your thoughts and experience of the ideas we cover. Compassionate mind training incorporates mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is the act of purposefully bringing your attention to your experience in the present moment. In doing so, we build self-awareness and open opportunity for managing our experience thoughtfully and with purpose. You do not need to have any experience of mindfulness. Whether you are completely new to these skills, or want to develop your existing practice, this course will help you to develop a mindfulness practice designed to enhance self-compassion.

This course is open to everyone. I would recommend the course to anyone wanting to reduce self-criticism, manage low mood or anxiety, develop a more supportive and encouraging internal voice and feel positive towards themselves.

This course is often beneficial in managing mild-moderate anxiety, stress and depression. Compassionate mind training is an evidence-based approach for the treatment of depression and anxiety. If you face significant challenges in your life, such as severe mental health symptoms or recent life events, please contact me before booking. I would be pleased to discuss the suitability of the group and/or other treatment options with you.

Each session builds on the last and you will gain most benefit if you are able to attend all 8 weeks. If you know that you will miss more than one session, I advise that you book at another time when you will be able to attend all sessions.

Please simply bring yourself and a curious attitude.

Given this is an online course, it will require that you have a reliable internet connection and a private space to speak. Using headphones can help to protect privacy.

To help us connect, I ask that you attend with your camera turned on so that we can see each other. Should you need to take a break you can turn your camera off temporarily as needed, but generally I ask that you keep your camera on during the session. I will also ask that you refrain from eating (as if we were in person), but you are welcome to have a drink with you. We will take one short break during each session.

It is helpful to wear comfortable clothing and to be seated watching the screen using a computer, tablet or phone so that you are comfy during the session and imagery practices. If you are using a mobile phone please have this propped up rather than in your hand. I would advise a PC or tablet if possible to allow you to more easily see other group members.

The sessions will be hosted via a video platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams. You will be sent a link by email which you can click to join the session. Detailed joining instructions will be provided by email ahead of the group.

This should not affect your attendance. Please discuss any changes to your medication with your GP. I will ask all participants to complete some simple screening questions before confirming your place on the course to ensure that the course is suitable for you.

The course typically has up to 10 participants to allow us to get to know one another. It’s not too big that we can’t connect with one another, or too small that we don’t have a range of individuals and experiences.

A full refund will be given for cancellations made before 08/01/21.

25% of the fee paid will be refunded for cancellations made from 08/01/21 to 18/01/21.

No refunds will be made for cancellations made after 18/01/21.
